Travel Information & how to get to Chamonix...!
Tim's top tip! By air to Geneva & then take the coach the 88km to Chamonix. Alternatively take a taxi which can be as economical if there are four of you. Agree the price with the driver before setting off. The coach takes you to Chamonix town center from where you can either take a taxi or train the 1.5Km to Les Praz & Le Chalet du Lac. Alternatively if you have little or no luggage it is a pleasant 15 minute walk!
Fly/Hire Car: This is a good option if there is a group of 4 - 5 of you. Be warned, try to hire your car in France (Geneva Airport - French sector), as Switzerland is more expensive than France is for car hire. Geneva Airport Terminal has an exit into France and if you take that exit & hire your car it is much cheaper! Alternatively hire via UK agent or on the WWW.

Geneva airport is a small airport and there is only one baggage claim area for international flights. After the baggage claim you have to choose between two exits. One in front of you which exits on the Swiss side and another one on the left which goes to the French side (panels indicate these two different exits). On either side you must go through the airport police and customs and then you enter a room where you will find car rentals and telephone booths. From there you exit to the parking lot where the shuttle bus stop is situated. The shuttle bus to Chamonix starts from the French side and stops on the Swiss side before entering the highway to Chamonix.

Haute-Savoie is at the cross-roads of the European motorway system: Germany to Spain via Switzerland; France to Italy via the Autoroute Blanche and the Mont-Blanc Tunnel. Chamonix is Europe's most readily accessible mountain resort 4 Lane highway right into town centre 1 hour from Geneva, 6 hours from Paris, 3 hours from Turin & 2 hours from Lyon. Road tunnel under the Mont-Blanc into Italy.
Chamonix is only 560 miles from Calais & the Channel Tunnel - AutoRoute all the way & the roads are really good. It takes me about 7 - 8 hours & the Autoroute tolls cost £70 return for a car (price correct January 1998), add 30% for a mini-bus! Distances from Chamonix to: Geneva 80km; Lyon 226km; Marseilles 521km & Paris 612km via the AutoRoute Blanche (A40 motorway) just 20km away linked to the national and European motorway system. Except during severe snowstorms, roads into Chamonix are cleared.
