Summer Activities....

Chamonix is a summer as well as a winter resort and a centre for numerous sports & leisure activities for people of all ages.  Here's a few of them:

Climbing

Mont-Blanc massif and the Chamonix Valley means high mountains offering climbing of all levels, superb granite and miles of limestone cliffs.

Golf

Chamonix has an excellent 18 hole golf course, 6076m, par 72 and there are also courses at Evian and Verbier.

Hiking

Chamonix offer miles of beautiful mountain trails & many of these are high mountain trails easily accessible by cable cars & sign posted along the route.  There are walks of varying degree & for the very energetic there the Tour of Mont Blanc which can take 8 - 10 days to complete as well at the Haute Route which runs from Chamonix to Zermatt.  Both of these walks go via mountain huts & valley hotels for over night stops.

Mountain Biking

For details and route guides in and around Chamonix please look at the mountain biking page.

Mountaineering

Chamonix is a world famous centre & considered the birthplace of mountaineering.  Whatever your level you'll not fail to be impressed by the Alps & what they have to offer mountaineers, young & old.  The town centre based 'bureau de guides' cater for tuition and guiding services for all levels of experience.  There is also an information & meteo (weather) office.

Parapenting / Paragliding

Parapenting, as it is called in France, is a very popular sport in Chamonix due to the high mountains & easy cable car access to the designated launch  sites for this sport - Le Brevent (Planpraz), Aiguille du Midi, Les Houches, Grands Montets, Aiguille du Plan and Plaine Joux . Chamonix is a wonderful place to learn how to free fly & with two designated landing sites almost in the town centre you'll not fail to be de drawn as a spectator if not an aspiring pilot.  If you just want to have a go then you can take a tandem flight with a qualified instructor & if you get 'hooked' lessons with a paragliding school.

Bowling, Pool & Snooker

Chamonix bowling arcade has eight international alleys & pool and snooker tables.

Horse Riding

Chamonix are two stables where you can hire horses or ponies.

Swimming Pool and Sauna

There is a public indoor & outdoor pool in Chamonix town centre complete with diving pool and water chutes.  Be warned that they insist on swimming trunks & do not allow shorts to be worn by swimmers, adults or children.  Open every day 14.00-20.00hr and Friday until 21.00hr.

Tennis and Squash

Town centre sport hall  open every day 9.00-12.15hr and 15.00-19.30hr.

Fishing

Les Houches has well a stocked trout lake & they queue up to get hooked!  Tackle and fresh bait (worms) can be bought from the tobacco shop adjacent to the car parking area.  On the far side of the lake is a small wooden kiosk where you can buy a license for the amount of fish you want to catch either 3, 5 or 7.   Fishing only takes place when the kiosk & lake is supervised & this is only between about 0900 -1200 & 1500 -1800.  The lake is not open on Mondays or during the winter months.  On our last visit the kiosk also stocked bait.

Swimming, Sunbathing, Windsurfing and BBQs

There are 3 lakes at Passey, en-route and close to Sallanches.   The water is cool, good quality and parts of the surrounding area has been landscaped and laid to grass with great mountain backdrops.  These are great places for BBQs, swimming, various water sports & fishing.  Different parts of the lakes are designated for particular activities.  Whilst these lake are some 12 miles from Chamonix a trip here can be conveniently combined with a visit to the Carrefour hypermarket and Decathlon sports super-store in Sallanches making it a worthwhile trip.

Rafting

The local river L'Arve which runs through Chamonix offers a white knuckle ride as do other rivers in the area.  There is a raft guiding company in Chamonix.

Canyoning

Abseiling down water falls and sliding down rock chutes into deep pools.  Combining climbing & swimming this is a great way to see the river & parts of the landscape you'd never see while keeping cool in the summer heat.

Hydrogrese

'White water swimming,' supervised by the rafting companies who provide guides & the necessary  equipment.  Swimmers use reinforced wetsuits, flippers, crash hats & a flotation aid to ride with the flow of the river, including the rapids!
